Cost of Father's Day Barbeque Decreases in 2009

- Arizona meal for 10 is $50.38

ARIZONA, June 15, 2009 ?? As Arizonans celebrate Father’s Day this year, we can treat Dad to a barbeque including hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad and all the fixings for less than we did last year. According to the Arizona Farm Bureau’s informal survey, this barbeque, fit for a king, will cost $50.38 for an Arizona family of 10, or $5.04 per person. This is a decrease of $1.85 or about 3.5 percent less than the 2008 barbeque at $52.23.

This cost estimate is the result of the Arizona Farm Bureau’s informal survey of the prices for basic food items found at a typical family barbeque. The 2008 survey was the benchmark year for pricing the survey items.

 According to Sheila VanHofwegen, Farm Bureau member and Maricopa County chair of the Women’s Leadership Committee in Tolleson, Ariz., “The cost of food is where you can work the family budget. I always think of ways I can modify my shopping list to save money.”

  • Buy store brand items;
  • Ask other family members to bring various side-dishes;
  • Use coupons;
  • Shop meat sales; and
  • Buy fresh instead of processed items.

The Arizona Farm Bureau survey shopping list includes hot dogs, hamburger, buns, potato salad, baked beans, sliced cheese, carrots, broccoli, tortilla chips, salsa, watermelon, lemonade and milk all in quantities sufficient to serve a family of 10.

Arizona farmers and ranchers produce most of the ingredients in the Father’s Day barbeque meal including beef, pork, potatoes, milk, lemons, broccoli, corn, salsa and others.

The menu includes: 1 pound hot dogs; 2-pounds hamburger; 2-pounds potato salad; 2 pound can baked beans; 16 oz bag tortilla chips; 8 oz jar of salsa; 1 whole watermelon; 1 pound each sliced cheese, baby peeled carrots, and broccoli florets; 1 gallon lemonade; 10 single servings of milk, 1 package each of hamburger and hot dog buns; and condiments.
