Hickman Family Farms Responds to the National Egg Recall

(August 19, 2010) Remember, there are almost 300 million hens in the country.  Our industry produces almost that many eggs every day. Billions of people around the world depend on our product for some of their daily nutrition. Eggs contain the most digestible protein available in nature. Our industry doesn’t recommend eating raw eggs, just like you shouldn’t eat raw pork, raw chicken, or drink unpasteurized milk.  In fact, no one since Rocky Balboa has actually eaten a raw egg on purpose.   You shouldn’t drink downstream from the herd, play in the street, or eat unwashed greens.  Proper food preparation is everyone’s responsibility; it’s a shame if eggs disappear from anyone’s diet.

We don’t want to minimize anyone’s discomfort or distress, but it’s a fact:  If eggs are cooked, you cannot get sick…  Period.

We test, test, test our flocks, products, and environments and we remain confident that we are producing the safest food product in Arizona.  Our eggs are available at retail and wholesale outlets statewide.

Notes on the Recall
The Associated Press reports this morning that an egg recall prompted by a salmonella outbreak has been expanded to 17 states and 380 million eggs.

According to the story, “eggs affected by the expanded recall were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers and food service companies in Georgia, California, Colorado, Minnesota, Arkansas, Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, Oregon, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.”

The eggs were distributed by Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa, to food wholesalers, distribution centers and food service companies. The AP says that “the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with state health departments to investigate the illnesses. No deaths have been reported, said Dr. Christopher Braden, a CDC epidemiologist involved in the investigation.”
